Thermodynamics of Biological Systems
Abstract
Traditionally, scientific research in biology, medicine and ecology is based on methods of observation and experiment. These do not allow the actual processes occurring in living organisms and their regularities to be determined, only certain assumptions to be made. As a result, the definition of life, the function of homeostasis, biorhythms and other phenomena still lack an unambiguous understanding, and problems are addressed through numerous experiments that often do not lead to concrete results. This work analyses the functioning of living organisms from the perspective of modern physics – more precisely, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, the engine of the entire material world around us. The analysis determines the nature and regularities of the main processes occurring in living organisms, the functions and properties of their organs and systems, and the cause-and-effect relationships between them, making it possible to solve urgent problems in biology, medicine and ecology more effectively.
